From centralized grids to “energy islands”: how the production, management and sharing of energy are changing within local communities.
The energy transition beyond large numbers
In recent years, the share of energy produced from renewable sources has grown significantly across Europe and particularly in Italy. However, this growth does not automatically translate into greater autonomy for families, districts, schools or small businesses.
A large part of generation remains concentrated in large plants connected to national grids. Citizens continue to perceive energy as a service to be purchased, rather than as infrastructure whose responsibilities, opportunities and economic benefits can be shared.
What we mean by “microgrids” and “energy islands”
A microgrid is a local electricity network capable of integrating different elements:
- production plants such as solar, cogeneration or other renewable sources;
- storage systems including batteries, hybrid solutions and H₂-ready technologies;
- distribution infrastructure dedicated to a building, a complex or a small community;
- control devices and intelligent load-management systems.
When a microgrid is designed to guarantee a certain degree of autonomy from the main grid, it is often referred to as an “energy island”: a system capable of continuing to operate, at least partially, when the external grid is limited or unavailable.
Why microgrids are relevant for designers and investors
Microgrids represent a natural meeting point between designers, technologies and capital:
- they have a defined perimeter such as a school, condominium or district;
- they generate measurable energy and economic flows;
- they can be connected to ESG and green-transition objectives;
- they can be replicated modularly across different contexts.
For finance, this means supporting projects with clear, traceable and monitorable metrics, where the link between investment and benefit is easier to communicate.
The potential role of HYNORA
